We all have a story. Our stories give us a glimpse into who we are. Where we came from. How we got there. How we arrived where we are today.

Joshua's story has been a long and colorful path full of numerous, yet almost predictable, twists and turns. Where did his story begin? It began in the late 1800s with his great grandmother’s harrowing escape from Russia. Finding herself suddenly widowed with two young girls to provide for, she knew she had to leave Russia for a more secure and safe life in America.

Traveling Mom

In her desperation to leave, she picked up her young daughters and traveled the breadth of icey Siberia by foot. She had saved enough money to book passage for herself and the girls on a ship sailing to America. After many hard months at sea they finally arrived, settling in Seattle.

Years later, our story continues when one of those girls married and gave birth to three daughters. The youngest of the three was very creative, intuitive and unpredictable. It was after this youngest daughter married and began raising her own three daughters that the glory of Hollywood seized her. She couldn’t put off her dream of being an actress any longer. Leaving her two older daughters behind, she picked up two-year-old Ruby and boarded a train to Hollywood.

Hollywood Calls

Ruby grew up in Hollywood in the 1940s. She became a dancer and was working in movies when she met the love of her life, Dan. They married and settled in Phoenix, far from the stage. No matter, because Ruby and Dan began raising a family and rejoiced at the birth of their first child, Joshua.

Joshua grew up in sunny Arizona, but he managed to travel and see many different areas of America. Along with frequent visits to his grandmother in Hollywood, his father took him on many train trips across the country. By the age of 17 Joshua decided to leave Phoenix and his family. Without a clue as to where he would go, he “borrowed” his mother’s station wagon and headed east. The first hitchhiker that he picked up was headed to Kansas City. Since the hitchhiker had a gun and Joshua didn’t, the hitchhiker got his way. They both went to Kansas City.

Art School and a Girl

Joshua’s stint in Kansas City was long enough to familiarize himself with art schools in the area. He visited the Kansas City Art Institute, where, years later, he returned and earned his bachelor’s degree in painting and printmaking.

While at the art institute, he married a local girl. They remained in the Kansas City area where he began working as a self-trained graphic artist. He immersed himself in the study of photography and typography, using these skills to sharpen his designs. After several years he had become an excellent and sought-after graphic designer. He opened his own graphic design studio in 1982.

Blame it on his mother, his grandmother, or his great grandmother, but in 1987 Joshua felt it was time to pick up and move — to follow his own dream. He packed up the wife and 5 kids and moved to Israel. Upon arriving in Jerusalem, he opened a graphic design studio in which he continued designing and producing award-winning projects.

First Love

In the late 1990’s, with the burst of the hi-tech bubble, his clients started dropping off. Joshua saw this turn of events as an excellent opportunity to return to his first love — etching. He began by renting studio space and working at the Jerusalem Print Studio.

What a pleasant surprise that was! In his prints he could see the culmination of everything he had learned as a photographer, typographer, and graphic designer. A lifetime of travels, experiences, and studies suddenly opened up before him.

Since that reunification with etching and printmaking Joshua has continued to refine his skills. He now prints in his own home studio just outside of Jerusalem.

Ideas? Joshua’s creativity never stops. He takes an idea or an object that anyone might have, but puts a new slant on it — he immerses it in FUN. You can be sure that when looking at Joshua’s work, you will be entertained.

In Joshua’s own words, “If it isn’t fun; don’t do it!”

Currently

Joshua Goodman lives with wife, Gayla Goodman in Mevasseret Zion, Israel. They are grandparents to 4 babes (2 are still in the oven), and 1 new puppy, who remains nameless until someone thinks of a name for him. When not working at Cardo Systems as lead graphic designer, he prints in his studio-at-home. He plays contrabass with the Jerusalem contingent of Gypsy Jazz and good ole fashioned guitar with the Hazel Hill String Band.
