Line and Space — a Dialog

In art, as in nature, line and space are opposed. Space fills while line divides; space is soft while line is hard-edged; space speaks of volume while line occupies no turf; space speaks of mass, while line has no mass and so on.

On the other hand space is a set of an infinite number of points and a line, likewise, is a set of an infinite number of points. Also space, either outer space or any volume, is curved which means that there is an edge. Where there is an edge, there is a line, a dividing line. Einstein gave us the concept that space, an infinite continuum, is curved. Infinity has an edge, and by implication something beyond the edge — beyond infinity.

We speak of drawing a line in the sand to describe an end to whatever limit of patience or acceptability of behavior we will tolerate. But at the edge of the ocean the waves will wash away the line in the sand, and in the desert the wind will sweep it away. Likewise our personal boundaries are swept away by this or that spirit or mood. Sadness is swept away by joy and it might even be said that death is swallowed up by life as much as the other way around.

In any event, the line that divides, for example, day and night; those two great volumes, or whatever great volumes we carry with us and the edge between them is the subject of the discussion of this exhibition.
